Vision, volunteer leadership and finances
The Teaneck Junior Football League is a 501 (c) 3 volunteer organization founded in 2001 for the purpose of teaching young people the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, and the importance of goal-setting, perseverance and fair-play in overcoming life’s obstacles. Each year, TJFL volunteers train and coach about 150 young men and women. The program provides uniforms, equipment, practice facilities, coaching and mentorship.
TJFL is a member of North Jersey Pop Warner football league, and operates as many as four football teams and cheerleading squads for different age groups. Our parent volunteers and experienced volunteer coaches are committed to teaching the proper fundamentals of football, sportsmanship and the value of teamwork and perserverence in a non-threatening environment at a reasonable price.
We are committed to teaching the proper fundamentals of football, sportsmanship and the value of teamwork in a non-threatening environment at a reasonable price. The league is staffed by a cadre of volunteer coaches, some of them former professional players and long-time youth coaches who have many years of football coaching experience
Cedric James is president of Teaneck Junior Football League Inc., a non-profit that hosts football, cheerleading and track & field training for 165 youngsters.
James’ is truly a football family. The native of Harlem operated tackle football teams in the Bronx for 12 years with his wife, Diane, to help keep kids off the street and use sports to inspire them to further their education by winning admission to prominent high schools, such as Fordham Prep, Mount St. Michael’s and James’ alma mater, Cardinal Hayes.
A graduate of North Folk State University, James discovered his passion for football when his sons were age 5 and 6. James enrolled them with the small youth team and became one of the coaches and has managed youth football teams ever since.
James moved to Teaneck in 2007, but continued to coach in the Bronx until 2013, when he was recruited by Teaneck Junior Football to takeover leadership of the program. He oversaw its affiliation with the national Pop Warner Little Scholars organization, rallied adult volunteers and community financial support to purchase new uniforms and equipment.
In his first year with Pop Warner, Teaneck fielded 5 tackle football teams, a flag football squad and a cheerleading team. In total, the program registered 165 boys and girls age 7 to 14. And Teaneck Pop Warner is poised to grow with the launch of a track & field program, youth football clinics and combines and the move to new Votee Park Sportsplex, an artificial turf field.
